Events

Every year, Heavitree Local History Society holds four quarterly meetings each with an external speaker, and additionally a couple of walks / tours in the Heavitree area.

Unless indicated, meetings are held at Heavitree United Reformed Church, at 7:30pm on the second Wed of Mar, Jun, Sep & Dec.

'A History of Exeter Hospitals'

The talk will cover a great array of local health initiatives from the first leper facility in the city to the Nightingale Hospital built during the Covid outbreak. Responses to major events like the 1832 Cholera epidemic and the First World War will be discussed. Institutions described will include the old Workhouse, the original and subsequent RD&E hospitals, the eye infirmary and the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital.

Several of the hospitals to be highlighted were in or close to Heavitree including the Old City Hospital, off Heavitree Road, the ‘new’ city hospital in Gladstone Road and Mowbray House Maternity Hospital off Butts Road.

The talk will also celebrate major medical inventions and innovations in Exeter.
